Privacy Policy
OpenLane is a swim-training app built by an independent developer. This page explains, plainly, what information OpenLane collects, where it is stored, and who can see it.
In short: your swim workouts and health data live in your own private iCloud account and never pass through our servers. We store only your account email (or Apple ID, if you sign in that way) and a timestamp each time you sign in, so we can run the app and understand how often it's used.
Information we collect
| Data | Why we collect it | Where it's stored |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Creating and signing in to your account | Supabase (our backend provider) |
| Name (optional) | Personalizing your profile, if you share it via Sign in with Apple | On your device only |
| Sign-in timestamps | Understanding how often the app is used, in aggregate | Supabase |
| Data | Why we collect it | Where it's stored |
|---|---|---|
| Heart rate, active energy, swim stroke count, swim distance | Building your workout summaries and training analysis | Apple Health, on your device |
| Swim workouts saved to Apple Health by other apps (such as Garmin Connect), with their distance, stroke count, heart rate and active energy — only if you turn on Me → Import swims from other apps | Showing those swims in your Log, streak and Insights | Read from Apple Health on your device; the imported swims are kept in your own private iCloud account (CloudKit) |
| Swim workout logs, custom workouts, your weekly goal and settings | Letting you review and plan your training | Your own private iCloud account (CloudKit) |
| The weather and air-quality readings at the time of each swim | Showing the conditions you swam in on that swim's detail screen | Your own private iCloud account (CloudKit) |
Importing swims from other apps is off until you turn it on. When it is on, OpenLane reads those swim workouts from Apple Health on your device and saves a copy in your swim history. That data stays on your device and in your own iCloud, and you can turn the import off at any time in Me; swims already imported stay in your history until you delete them.
Your swim logs, custom workouts, and Health data are never uploaded to any server we operate or can access. They sync only through Apple's iCloud, under your own Apple ID, the same way Photos or Notes sync across your devices. We have no technical ability to view this data, even if we wanted to.
Share cards are made on your device. A photo you choose is used only to make the card, and nothing is sent to OpenLane.
Pool conditions: weather and air quality (optional)
OpenLane can show the conditions at your pool for outdoor swimming: lightning, the short-term forecast, UV, heat stress and air quality. You can turn it off, or keep just the weather or just the air quality, with the switches in Me → Pool conditions. How it gets the readings depends on the setting you choose in Me → Pool area:
- Singapore (Automatic, or a chosen area): the app downloads the National Environment Agency's public weather and air-quality readings from data.gov.sg (these may come through OpenLane's own server, which only fetches and caches the same public data and receives nothing about you). Nothing about you is sent beyond the ordinary web request itself (which, like any website visit, carries your device's IP address). No location permission is needed.
- My location: only if you choose it, the app asks for your approximate location. Inside Singapore it is used on your device only, to pick the nearest NEA town and weather station. Outside Singapore, a position rounded to about 10 km is sent to Open-Meteo.com to fetch a weather forecast and an air-quality estimate for your area. It is not linked to your account and we don't store it; Open-Meteo's own privacy policy applies to that request.
- Pool conditions off: no weather or air-quality requests are made, and no location is used. With Weather or Air quality switched off, only the other one is requested.
Weather and air-quality readings are information, not medical advice, and OpenLane can't know whether a particular pool is open. Weather data outside Singapore is provided by Open-Meteo.com, and air quality estimates by Open-Meteo.com using Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) data, under the CC BY 4.0 licence.
What we don't do
- We don't run advertising or third-party analytics SDKs.
- We don't sell your data. The only outside services that receive anything are the ones named above (Supabase for your account, and the weather and air-quality sources if you turn pool conditions on), and only to provide the feature you chose.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We can't see your swim workouts, Health data, or custom workouts — they never reach our servers.
Who can see your data
Your account email and sign-in timestamps are stored with Supabase, our backend provider, and are protected by database access rules (row-level security) so that no other user — and no part of the app itself — can read another person's sign-in history. As the developer, I can see account emails and aggregate sign-in activity for the purpose of understanding app usage and providing support. I cannot see your workouts, swim data, or Health information.
Data retention and deletion
Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Me → Delete Account), which removes your account and sign-in straight away. You can also email edmundliewyonghock@gmail.com and it will be removed within 30 days. Health and workout data stored in your private iCloud account can be deleted at any time from the Health app or by deleting the OpenLane data in iCloud settings, independent of your OpenLane account.
Children's privacy
OpenLane is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above will change, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
